Vpn's are safe to use, the advantage of using a vpn is it can hide your location and or ip address. And also many vpn's can provide as such freenet like psiphon and others. The disadvantage is uhhh.. I can't think any :imsorry

The disadvantage is battery life it may drain fast :)
